Frequently asked questions

How is the date worked out?

About 7,700 kcal equals 1 kg of body weight. The difference between your weights is multiplied by 7,700 and divided by your daily calorie gap.

What daily deficit should I choose?

Around 500 kcal a day gives about 0.5 kg a week, a pace often recommended. Use our calorie calculator to find your maintenance calories first.

Will I really reach it on that date?

Probably not exactly. Weight loss usually slows as you get lighter, and water weight changes from day to day. Treat the date as a guide.

Why is the deficit capped at 1,000 kcal?

Larger deficits make it hard to get enough nutrients and are not advised without medical supervision.

Does it work for gaining weight?

Yes. Enter a goal above your current weight and the daily surplus you plan.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to a server.

How it is calculated

Days = |current weight − goal weight| × 7,700 kcal ÷ daily calorie gap, rounded up; weekly rate = gap × 7 ÷ 7,700 kg. The 7,700 kcal per kg rule is a simplification; real change slows over time (Hall and colleagues, 2011).
