Frequently asked questions

Which result should I follow?

Start with the healthy weight range: the weights that give a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9, the range the World Health Organization uses for adults. The four formulas give single figures and are best read as a rough guide.

Where do the four formulas come from?

Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) were written for medicine dosing. They add a fixed amount of weight per inch of height above 5 feet.

Why do I only see the BMI range?

The four formulas start at 152 cm (5 ft). For shorter heights only the BMI-based range is shown.

Does the ideal weight depend on my build?

Yes. Muscle, frame size and age change what is healthy for you, and the formulas do not include them. A doctor can tell you what suits you.

Is this suitable for children?

No. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific growth charts.

Can I use feet and inches?

Enter your height in inches when imperial units are chosen: 5 ft 7 in is 67 inches.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to a server.

How it is calculated

The healthy weight range is 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height² (height in metres), the WHO adult BMI range. The formulas add weight per inch above 5 ft: Devine men 50 kg + 2.3 kg, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg; Robinson men 52 + 1.9, women 49 + 1.7; Miller men 56.2 + 1.41, women 53.1 + 1.36; Hamwi men 48 + 2.7, women 45.5 + 2.2.
