Frequently asked questions
What is the conversion factor for cholesterol?
1 mmol/L of cholesterol equals 38.67 mg/dL. It is the same for total, LDL and HDL cholesterol.
Why are triglycerides different?
Triglycerides have a different molecular weight: 1 mmol/L equals 88.57 mg/dL.
Which countries use which unit?
mg/dL is used in the United States and some other countries; mmol/L in the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia.
Does it tell me if my cholesterol is high?
No. It only converts units. Ask your care team which targets apply to you.
Why does my result differ slightly from my lab report?
Labs round their figures. The calculator shows two decimals for mmol/L and whole numbers for mg/dL.
Is anything I enter stored or sent?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to a server.
How it is calculated
Cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL): mg/dL = mmol/L × 38.67. Triglycerides: mg/dL = mmol/L × 88.57. Factors from the NCEP Adult Treatment Panel III report.
