Frequently asked questions

What is the waist-to-hip ratio?

Your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. It shows how much weight is carried around the middle compared with the hips.

What is the WHO reference?

A World Health Organization expert report (2008) uses 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women; ratios at or above these are linked with higher health risks in research.

Where do I measure?

The waist halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, and the hips around the widest part of your buttocks, standing relaxed.

Does this tell me I am unhealthy?

No. It is one measure among many. Ask a doctor or nurse if you are worried about your weight or health.

Can I use inches?

Yes. Choose imperial units and enter both measurements in inches. The ratio is the same in any unit.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to a server.

How it is calculated

Ratio = waist ÷ hips, both in the same unit. The reference values, 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women, come from the World Health Organization report on waist circumference and waist-hip ratio (2008).
