Frequently asked questions
How is the number worked out?
Each activity has a MET value: how much energy it uses compared with sitting still. Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes.
Where do the MET values come from?
From the Compendium of Physical Activities, the standard reference used by researchers. The values are averages for adults.
Why might my fitness watch show a different number?
Watches use your heart rate and movement, while this calculator uses average values. Both are estimates; differences of 10 to 20% are common.
Does it include the calories I burn anyway?
Yes. MET values include your resting energy for that time, so the result is the total burned during the activity.
Can I use pounds?
Yes. Choose imperial units and enter your weight in pounds.
My activity is not listed. What can I do?
Choose the closest one by effort: a similar speed or intensity gives a similar result.
Is anything I enter stored or sent?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent to a server.
How it is calculated
Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes (the American College of Sports Medicine equation). MET values are approximate adult averages from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities.
