Frequently asked questions
What does BMI measure?
BMI is weight relative to height; it is a screening measure, not a diagnosis.
Can I use pounds and inches?
Yes. Choose imperial units and enter weight in pounds and height in inches.
Are adult BMI ranges suitable for children?
No. Children and teens require age- and sex-specific percentiles from a health professional.
Does BMI show body composition?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle, fat, bone, or individual health factors.
Is my measurement uploaded?
No. The calculation stays in your browser.
How it is calculated
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (or 703 × pounds ÷ inches² in imperial units). The result is compared with the World Health Organization's adult categories, and the healthy weight range for your height is the weight that gives a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9.
